Special grain for expecting cows?

Is it worth buying dairy goat text, or anything similar to feed to ensure complete nutrition for an expecting mom?
I'm using COB as a daily treat right now but would like to feed them whatever's best. Thanks.

I don't know what breed you have, but if they are in good condition now, don't "kill them with kindness" by going overboard with grains.

I'd make sure they had minerals (and kelp--has many trace minerals in it) available 24/7.
(Of course along with good hay and/or pasture.)

I do tend to kill with kindness. Minerals (loose and block), pasture etc are all fine. Thanks!

No grain until the last couple of weeks to steam her up for lactation. And then only in small amounts.
Good quality hay or pasture, plenty of water and free choice mineral should do her right.
Overcondition a pregnant animal and you are looking for disaster.
Fatty liver syndrome is not uncommon in cows that are overgrained before freshening and will kill her.

Would about 2 cups of COB per day cause any problems? I'm using it mainly as a training aid! Thanks.

I don't think 2 cups a day is really "feed" (unless we're talking mini's or a smaller breed here!). I'd count it more as what you are using it for--a training aid.

Is that standard cup measurements, or more like, "coffee can size" cups?!!

Jena, I take it you've seen my coffee cup? I think from now on, I'm going to call it a training aid.

I can't see a couple cups of grain affecting the cow but do remember that whatever you're putting into her in the last term, the calf is taking. You want a healthy calf but you don't want an oversized calf.

there is a dry cow mineral that helps avoid milk fever, and helps insure that they clean
