Mastitis update.

Well we had to put our cow down yesterday. We had thought she might recover. She must have had something else with the mastitis. She just kept losing weight no matter what we tried. She was so skinny it was pitiful. The Vet was surprised she even made it through as long as she did considering she would refuse to eat or drink for days at a time so you had to give her fluids.
She walked out in the pond yesterday and wouldn't come out. We had to make her come out then she just went down and never got back up....We messed with her all day with no improvement. It was a very hard day.
On a positive note I found a dairy about 20 miles from here that may be selling some cows in the fall. Maybe I can get one from them that I can at least feel a little easy about. They are going to sell a few because they cant pasture but a certain number of cows, so in the fall they sell the ones that don't give as much. Which should still be all we would need. I guess we will just see how it goes. I am still very upset about yesterday .Makes me wonder about the whole idea. I can handle the work on a farm...but the death part still gets me
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice about the cow, it was a huge help. Just wish it had turned out better.

I'm saddened by your post. The death on a farm is so hard to bear. Whether it's a duckling that got stepped on, a guinea that the fox got, or a goat that got pneumonia, it's always sad.

Yet it's a part that is as natural as birth. Without it, the universe wouldn't work. It will still happen if you're not there to care for them. Just be comforted in knowing that you made it as easy for her as you could during her illness, then were there to help ease her pain her when there was nothing else to do.

I am very sorry for your loss. It always sucks when you do everything you can for an animal and still lose them.

I am glad to hear that you are willing to try again this fall. Surely you will have better luck next time.

Best regards, Wendy

So sorry about your loss. I am glad she had somebody to take care of her through to the end.

I hope that you can find a healthy cow from that dairy. Stay away from the cows that come to the auction two weeks in a row from now on. I had the feeling that is why the man brought her right back the next week.

Sabrina, sorry about all the disappointment and pain....Consider buying a heifer and raising her your way from the start. Granted getting milk takes some time but maybe it would be worth the wait.....TJ
