calves and pneumonia?

well I had four little calves, now have 3 the one that did expire right away didn't have scours he seemed fine to me was just Down one morning with a snotty nose. Now it is very HOT and Humid here right now, all three of them are over the scours, and all 3 coughing calf # 1 didn't want his bottle this morning till we pursaded him. One of them I don't know why is still alive the PinthB has been coughing for a week, was so sick with the scours he couldn't even lift his head, we brought him through all that treated his bed sores chased away his maggots, I've treated him with Naxcel for 6 days now, and moving over to Tylan. (for the cough) he Coughs a deep cough and sticks out his tongue. He does feel improved enough now to play. Calf # 1 was great till this morning, I was going to band and disbud him as he lookd so good and now he does look like he feels poorly with a cough. What housing should I do with them? Should I throw them out on pasture with the lean to? I have them in a very airy barn, both doors front and back open. the heifer calf looked like the walking dead when we got her and now she's looking good BUT coughing..

I know to some it may work, but THROW AWAY THE NAXCEL!! Also forget the Tylan. If they have pneumnia that bad get to your vet today!!. Ask them for Dracxin first if they donot have it Micotil is nextlast request is Nuflur. With all 3 of these use a sulfa based drug with them too. Now Dracxin is expencive. But, it works really really good. If you have to use Micotil use it with extreme caution to yourself and others working with you. Do not even stick yourself with a wet needle of this stuff. A wet needle will not kill you but you may get sick. There is now a treatment fo Micotil injection accidents! Nuflur has been around for some time. it takes a higher does and needs to be redone in 72 hrs. But, it too works reall good.

Good lord I won't be able to afford the Dracxin for 3 calves it's almost $400 for 100ml, unless it's a 1 cc shot given once. I'll call in the morning, the Micotil I am not set up to handle, nuflor doesn't look too pricey. Cheaper than the Naxcel.

A good vet should sell you it by the ML/CC. Its dose is 1.1ML/CC per hundred weight if memory serves me. Usally one shot will do it. The vets up here sell it to us by the CC due to the price. We have tryed all the other broad spectrum antibiotics(Excnel, Naxcel and them types). W ehave had no luck with them. I sometimes think its what the vets got a deal on that week is what they push. When you are talking to the vet also see if they have SMZ tablets( better knowen to us as bactrum). These given with teh shot will help with the scours and pneumonia. They should be about $.25 each

This summer has been real hard on cattle due to the temp swings. This si the result of it.

Thanks Bob, that's what I thought was bringing on the problem, one day so hot and humid you can't breathe the next 60 degrees out, and the rain and tornadic weather weve had.

the vet wouldn't see them didn't have any SMZ, or Dracxin, they gave me a few names of farmers to call around and beg for meds, I called back and told them I'ld take the Micotil, and let me tell you it raised my blood pressure just holding it. We didn't hear calf nu # 3 coughing and she looked o.k. so we didn't inject her. The other two if looks could kill! I made hubby help hold them. usually the only beef he touches is on a bun. I come here to ask cause we are short on vets in our area. I hope they improve with this and don't need another shot.

Micotil is not that bad. It is a great drug. It just has been used less due to the complications it causes to humans if injected. I would tell you of my encounter withit but I do not want to worry others. Espically if this is their only option to use.
A vet that does not carry Sulfamethozine tablets is something else. You probally would have had better luck calling you doctor for some. The local farm stores should have Sustain III on the shelves for sale. These are bigger tablets that take 3 days to release the sulfa. Or another form is SUlmet which is a liquid. You should see a diffence in them with in 24 hrs. Only thing I have noticed is with Micotil you may have to give a second shot more offten then Draxxin.
If you need more help just ask

Oh I forgot this vet has been to my farm once in the year 2000, it's been that long.

I do have Corid, forgive my Ignorance, would that help with the treatment? I raise dairy goats and Always HAD dimethox-40 which I use (oral for cocidiosis in goats) but I have given it as label directed for pneumonia into the jugular of a sick calf and it brought a down calf around. This year being off the market I bought the gallon of Corid.
