Question How to get cows into squeeze shoot?

I found a place today that rents squeeze shoots, so I want to get my heifers scheduled for dehorning asap! (Like next week!)

They are currently in a 50x60 paddock, and won't let me get close enough to touch them let alone get a lead on their halters. I've never roped anything so that is out. Any suggestions on how I get them into the squeeze shoot?

Thanks in advance!

Whenever I've used a portable chute, I've always used set up panels using the strongest fence as an alley with the chute at the front. I leave the last panel somewhat outward (as a wing) and I quietly work the cattle around the fence and into the alley, draw the wing in and use it as a gate. If you work calmly and quietly, it works very well. Before you get all ready to go to work, make sure you have tested all the mechanisms to ensure they work well and you know how to use them correctly.

.
If you are going to have someone cut the horns off for you, they should know how to use the schoot also.

If you are going to cut the horns off yourself, you really need to know what you are doing before you start also.

If a vet is going to do the dehorning just let him tranquilize the heifers.

Vet is doing the dehorning - the office specifically said there had to be a sqeeze shoot (preferred) or stanchion available. I've got to take my dogs in for shots this week, so I will inquire further in person.

Moveable gates/panels are the key here. Form an area that you can get the cows into, then keep making it smaller. Keep quiet, hands down, move slow and latch/chain each gate panel as you go. Eventually the cows will see the shute as the only direction of escape. Practice a bit, you don't want to squeeze their head nor try to hold them by their chest or hips. A board or bar that you can shove in behind them to prevent backing up is helpful, too.

DH uses the gates you buy at Tractor Supply. They hinge together. He builds a little pen behind the squeeze chute and moves the gates in to make the pen smaller until the cow is forced into the chute. If your cows like grain, set a pan of grain in the chute and keep moving it forward until their head is in the catch gate, then close the catch gate on their neck.
