Dairy sanitizer

Hi all, I purchased 1 ounce packets of dairy sanitizer via internet and it will be delivered next week. I'm sure all my questions will be on the product label, but then again maybe not...so here they are:

Question #1 does the sanitizer completely take the place of soaps?

Question #2 if I mix a one ounce packet to 10 gallons of hot water, but only use 1gallon of mixture per day, are the other 9 gallons still good to use for the next 9 days? I do realize that the water will no longer be hot, but is the mixture is usable. I would only be washing buckets, milk bar, plastic bottles.

Most likely I will mix 1/4 packet to 2.5 gallons per day and leave it at that...TJ

When we dairied, we washed with liquid ivory soap, rinsed, then sanitized. Rinsed because soap will usually deactivate a sanitizer such as bleach. The sanitizer we used was a liquid concentrate from Fleet Farm.

There will probably be complete directions on your package...I can't imagine it wouldn't be good the followig days, but hot is definitely better than cool. You may be able to measure & mix for smaller batches, too.

Typically sanitizers do not take the place of soap. In our system, after we're done milking, we rinse, wash with detergent, rinse with acid. Then right before we start the next milking we run sanitizer through the lines. It's meant to kill any bacteria that might of grown between milkings.

I don't know how long a mixed up batch of sanitizer would last. I think I would try and stick with fresher batches though.

John, I never use soap of any kind in my shed. I have two "cleaners", one acidic, the other alkaline. The acidic is in the form of a dairy detergent, low foaming and odourless. This gets used every milking with hot water to clean out the milking machine and then I use the water to clean out calfateries, measuring jugs, buckets etc. The alkaline gets used once a week and flushes out any build up of milkstone and fat. I reuse that water too.

Your sanitizer is likely to be one of these two and will come with instructions. However, unless specially formulated for cold water use, the acidic will be pretty useless if made up and left to go cold, the alkaline has to be used with hot water.

Cheers,
Ronnie
