breeding question

I had a question about linebreeding. as in father to daughter, mother to son. I have done it in dogs and rabbits with much success and positive results. (I know alot about inheritable genetics..dont try this at home)

anyway. I am assuming it would also be ok to do this with cattle, but I thought I would check first. has anyone else done this?

The saying I have heard is that if it works, it is line breeding, if it does not work, it is inbreeding.

You have to look at what you have to work with. I will keep a bull I like and later on, use it on my herd. There you have son to mother. It worked out for me.

I would not do it for generations on end.

Every domestic breed of animal we have today is a result of inbreeding/linebreeding. Once an individual was found that exhibited the traits desired, that individual would be intensely inbred to set the desired type.

In the hands of an experienced breeder that knows what traits are desirable and what traits are not, and are willing to cull correctly, inbreeding/linebreeding can be very beneficial.

In the hands of someone not experienced or not willing to cull properly it can be a disaster.

thats what I thought. I have alot of experience with linebreeding for specific traits in dogs, and some in rabbits. my dog venture was very successfull. I assumed it can be done with any specie, I just thought I would double check.

I have bred mother to son for the past three years and have received three very nice calves.
