Talking The cows are home :)

The are really shy. They've never been milked and aren't halter broke, how do you recommend I proceed? The first cow is 5, has a 1 month old calf and is pg. The other is almost 2 an has a 1week old calf. She is not as shy and comes for range cubes, though she is not ready to be petted. Thoughts?

*edited to add* the calf is 2months old.

You state you have a 5 year old cow with a 1 month old calf and she is pregnant. How was this pregnancy determined?

a good question. They told me they bred her again. I have requested a copy of their records. Not sure how one determines if a cow is pg, still researching. Calf was born duringl Easter.

If you want me to come out and help ya figure it out Id love to of course! Or, you're welcome to come here and see me milk too... we're milking twice a day now that mama told the calf to take a hike! LOL everytime the calf tries to nurse mama runs away, so I had to milk her tonight too. anyway, just let me know.

Id really doubt that she's pg again. I know its possible, but not very likely at all, nor would I want my cow bred back that quickly I dont think. better to let her body recover just a bit.

at least you've got some time to work with them before you start milking.. the calves are both still young enough that you can let them get all the milk for now, then when the girls are a bit more friendly, you can try milking. Just let them warm up to you
