Santa Gertrudis

We now have the rear quarter of one in our freezer. It was organic, pasture-raised, and was only butchered because she was a pain in the behind to keep contained (our neighbor has them for breeding...this one was 4 years old, so we thought she would be tough). I'm used to grain-fed holsteins, but this beef blows that away by far. I'm astounded.

Just thought ya might like to know!

The best of the best. We raise lots of them here in Texas.

I am thinking of breeding my Limousin heifer to a SG bull - any thoughts on that cross?

SG is King's ranch breed isn't? We don't see much eared cattle up here.

Yes, the King Ranch developed the Santa Gertrudis cattle.

They are, of course, a set type, but the approximate genetic makeup is 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Shorthorn.

Should be a very nice calf.

I bet it'll be red.

It shouldn't be a problem with a Limousin, but since she's a heifer, you might want to make sure the bull doesn't throw too large a calf.

The butcher had lots of questions for my neighbor when he went to pick up the meat since we're in Ohio (not Texas!). Butcher claims it is the nicest beef he has ever seen.

King Ranch

Goggle the King Ranch. We went on a tour there last Summer. The heifers SG were grazing in a 1000 acre pasture of the most beautiful pasture land you have ever seen. It was a wonderful tour and so interesting. Also went to the museum in town the old saddles were so ornate and heavy. I could not even lift one no way I could have gotten on a horse. The King Ranch is still a working ranch and the home is still used by the family.
Sorry did not mean to steal the post. Susan
