When to breed our cow??

Our cow, a black bally or baldy, whichever you call them, (hereford/angus cross,) calved 7 weeks ago. A friend just introduced us to a rancher with a nice Angus bull, who is willing to breed her back for us. Now, the question is, I'm sure we've missed the first heat cycle, so when should I take the cow and calf to the bull so I don't miss the next one? Soon, I assume. I don't want to take advantage of his 'hospitality' any longer than necessary, as he's feeding hay, as we are, due to the drought. I'm going to take him hay, too as I can't make a decent pie, which was his first choice of payment. Thanks, Jan in Co

It is best to wait at least 45 days after a cow has calved before breeding her back. Yours is just over this, so any time now would be great. A cow cycles every 21 days on average (18-25 is about the range). After calving, it will take her some time to get cleaned up, and back into the swing of things, and this is why the 45 days. I have seen cows breed back earlier than that, but it is a good rule of thumb to follow. The only other thing to consider, is WHEN do you want her to calve?? If you breed her right now, you are looking at calving around Feb 20. In some areas, you may not want a calf then, because of the weather.

Thanks! I knew it would result in a winter calf, but we have a large barn they can hang out in when it's calving time. The gracious gentleman suggested we just leave her through the next cycle to be sure she settles, so guess I'd better brush up on my pie bakin'! Jan in Co
