I finally got a cow!!

I think this is only going to be about my second post in the cattle forum, but I'm sure you'll all be seeing more of me from now on. I brought my new jersey cow home today, and I'm already in love! She's a total sweetheart, and stood there without being tied while I (someone she just met a couple days ago and hadn't seen again till I brought her home today) milked her a bit to see how she'd react. She was a bit afraid of me at first, but now that I have her home she follows me around when I'm outside and calls to me every time I walk away. I'm SO happy!!

She looks a bit thinner in this pic than she does in person, not sure what's up with that. And I'm thinking her hooves look long, but maybe that's cause I'm used to seeing goat hooves? If they are too long, how do I trim them? lol

Aren't they just the sweetest? Did you name her and yes, her hooves look a little long, but I have no idea how you're supposed to trim them. I am sure someone will pop in and tell you!

Congratulation on your new girl! Don't you love the raw milk too?! Make ice cream!

I used to raise registered Jersey cows...and was a member of the Natl. Jersey Assc.....I loved my Jersey cows...sweet natured and gave wonderful milk...My milk cow had the same type of hooves...got hoof dressing and watched them in case they chipped,,,
Your girl is a beauty.....MissKitty

Beautiful!!

I'm strongly attached to my Jerseys, and in more ways than one. Once they are in milk it is though they have a tether about my neck, and they let me wander no further or longer than the next milking.

Thanks for the compliments! I am incredibly happy with her! Tonight when I milked her she just stood there and let me, gave me no trouble at all! My first taste of fresh jersey milk had me hooked! I've always loved dairy products but never been much of a milk drinker (I like it in my cereal is about it lol), after tasting her milk I think I'm going to be drinking plain ol' milk a lot now heheh. Oh, and she came with the name Meg, so we're just leaving it that way, I think it's cute.

She is very pretty. She is in good condition, not thin, but her hooves are a bit long and should be trimmed; Don;t ask me how.

I wonder if a horseshoer (farrier) will trim her feet for you?
Good looking gal!
Congrats!

I just dropped in to see the pictures, I havnt made the plunge yet to get a cow.
If you have ever trimmed goat hooves its pretty much the same from what I have seen, but of course all I have seen is what they have done at the sale barns where I used to go cowboy shopping.
I do know there are people that do it for a living but wouldnt know what to tell you on finding them. If you have a vet that will do a cow, then maybe they can offer some advice but I would get her done asap as it can be very uncomfortable.

I love your little Jersey. She is cute!
About trimming her hooves, in our area, we have individuals who have a portable cattle crush that is designed to raise the cow up on her side, she is strapped in, and they trim her feet. That is their profession. I do not know if they have a technical name, we just call them when we need it done because we know people who do it. I trying to tell you that I don't know what you would look them up under in the phone book.

Start with your local vet, he can probably give you the name of a hoof trimmer. If you have dairy farmers around, they should know who to get or they might even do it themselves. A small grinder with a special wheel is what's used to do the trimming normally. There are special hoof knives made for cattle feet also.
I hope this helps you some.

Ya know... I should ask my farrier if he knows how to do cattle too, I know he owns cattle! lol There are no dairies anywhere around here, but there are very large amounts of beef cattle all over the place, so hopefully I'll find someone. Thanks!

She looks good, with the exception of her too-long feet.

Good luck with her.

Congrats and pretty cow! We're just milking our first, as well and really love it.

Don't forget to use teat dip after each milking. We had a bout with mastitis and lost a quarter so very hard lesson. Turns it out that its likely because we didn't dry teat her when done milking before her calf.

Has she been bred back yet? Are you planning to breed her soon if not?

She is a very nice looking cow. Can any Jersey experts on here explain about the seemingly many shades of color these girls come in? I mean, some are very light in color while others are very dark, I was just wondering the reasoning? (From the picture, her teats look a little short, was it just the angle of the pic?) I hope the little Jersey calf I just bought will be as nice...

(Don't worry, you all will be seeing pictures as soon as I get her home LOL)

Nice looking cow. She is my favorite color of Jersey. Good Luck! (It starts here, soon another few will be wandering in your pasture.)
