A day the sale barn (pics)
Well I finally had a few extra dollars to invest and decided to visit the local calf sale barn. I've got to say I think I'm getting better at bidding on dairy calves. The only sad note to the day was that "TINY" that is tiny, has either pinkeye or was kicked or stepped on by the two bigger calves during the ride home. I saw and held this calf several times at the auction, and never noticed the eye damage. Maybe each time I viewed her from the wrong side. Regardless I'm medically treating her in every way I can. Right now with Pen G and salt water solution directly into the eye, LA200 will be next. Other than that I had a great time spending lots of money, and here's what I bought. Bottom line good calves can be had at auction, so don't be totally afraid to visit one.....TJ
Sorry photos are so big, no time to edit...TJ

Well topside, that should take care of your excess milk you were posting about. Nice looking gals, are you keeping them as milk cows or weanling and selling?

Sungirl, all three will be eventually weaned, raised to 300-400 pounds, and sold as family milk cows....at least that's my hope. So far I have been successfull, lets hope the trend continues.

dh & I used to raise a few extra gals per year for the purpose of being sold. That only started to work out 3 years after we started.... I am a sucker for babies and had to keep all 3 per year! We still have both 6 "claves" (Now full size cows.) They are right now feeding our soon to be weaned Jerseys.

You are a fortunate man, at the sale here in washington you just cant find a heifer, calf no matter what your looking for, well there will be the occasional single calf going through once every few months but thats it. I just sold a two week old holstein/heifer for three hundred and fifty dollars and only sold it because it was for a neighbors grand children and they are the happiest kids now. We do have a ton of dairies out here and I am thinking of going one day to one of them to pick up a cow that is only giving three to four gallons of milk aday. the daries let these go for nothing, your calfs look beautifull.

Our local Farmers Auction House closed down this winter. Seems they got a reputation, (a bad rep.)
I guess my question is, if you're spending all of this time feeding them, getting them ready to sell for family milk cows, ...how do you know they were not Freemartins? (I even overheard one guy mentioning to another farmer that when he has twins, he will even bottle feed the male for a week or two so that they don't look like twins in the sale barn) I guess you could have them Vet. checked?
oh, how much did they go for at the auction?

at our livestock auctions in PA, they now "tube" the heifers to check if they are free martens. There will not be a complete uterus in the free martens, so the "tube" will not go in all the way. I just bought a holstein free marten for our petting zoo use for $25; while another holstein heifer that was good went for $500 the same day.

Slev, the heifers are all Vet checked (freemartin probe) and also udder checked and marked accordingly. Dairy heifers @ auction sell from $200 to $700 each, with a few even higher....Quite a gamble I'd say, do lots of reading and raise bull calves for practice first, that's my advice and I'm no expert.

Well that's good to know. Right now, rearing a calf for the market is not in the plans for me, but maybe once we move. As far as Jersey calves around here, there are none...! Seems like every dairy farm hangs on to them. I'd go to the county fairs, and get all worked up, and try to buy one only to find out, anyone who had one was hanging on to her. I like the idea of raising steers first. Your girls are great looking. Good Luck..!

Nice calves!!!
About all we can get around here are Holstiens. (Cheap though) Once in a while, a white face is up for sale (Herford), but they generally keep the Angus, Jerseys etc...

John,
Those look great. We definitely need to stay in touch when you're ready to sell those - when do you think that will be?. With the number of inquiries I get for a family milking cow that I cannot fill I would love to continue to pass your name along.

Linda, thanks for the support...One is already sold and will be delivered to the new owner in 30-40 days....I will also take buyers for the other two anytime but will not let them off the farm until I feel they are ready....thanks again Linda......John
