calf born- mother died need some help (on colostrum formulas)

I knew the calf was going to be born today and sure enough it was, checked the mother out at 2:00 and then at four and she was giving birth and it wasn't going good had the neighbors come down and we hooked up the chains and got the calf out, but the mother had a prolapsed uterus major some guts to, pumped about forty- six onces of colustrum out of her and she basically went dry (butcher came). I gave the calf stimulation rub and the neighbor rubbed the lungs, calf is doing well. took six onces of colustrum at three o'clock, eight onces at six thirty, and will feed again tonight at ten thirty, she will drink eight onces again. I have about twennty two to twenty four onces of colustrom left. I will put her one milk base formula tomorrow, I need to know some good things to put in the milk to help her (colustrum type formulas) thanks guys. by the way the calf is a beautiful half red holstein half black angus seventy to eighty pounds.

The calf can only absorb colostrum for so many hours. We tube and give colostrum after they're born, and after that use regular powdered milk for calves. I would freeze the leftover colostrum incase you or a neighbor needs some later in the year.

Sorry you lost the cow, but you're lucky you have neighbors willing to lend a hand!

PS
We use colostrum replacer, about 2 quarts.

Sorry to hear about the cow. Always a major disappointment although I try to be realistic and tell myself that it wasn't a double disappointment.

The calf has had a good few feeds of colostrum (good on you for quick thinking) and in these cases I put them straight on to milk or milk replacer after finishing the colostrum without any additives.

Good luck.

PS: The last poster (sorry, can't see you name in the editing screen and I've forgotten it already!) is right. Colostrum is only of use for the first 12-24 hours after birth.

Cheers,
Ronnie
