I guess I was surprised to get milk out of two teats... since I tried two yesterday and got nothing.
Im psyching myself up now to fill a bucket with soapy warm water and go out and try milking her I can do this!

both teats, not both cows... though Austin, my 3 yr old exclaimed happily, that when Im milking the mama cow, he's going to milk the baby! EEEK!!! I DONT think that will work well!

thats fantastic!
Keep the calf off her. Pen the calf up alone.
Milk the cow twice a day at as close to 12 hour intervals as possible.

Now, this is just pitiful.. I admit, but it was the first time for both of us... its a pint jar...lol... and we just covered the bottom, but the stall dh made for her is too wide and when she decides to scoot over, I cant reach her....a couple of times she just turned around in it while I was milking... and she got one decent kick at my forearm, but Im okay. The 9 qt pail is definitely overkill for now...rofl and the mini strainer takes no time at all for that little bit.

Keep trying and build a stanchion. She probably isn't drying up so much as she is holding up. Once she realizes that you are going to milk her no matter what, she will let her milk down for you. Just keep at it.

Congratulations on the teeny bit of milk in the nice little jar!! It IS exciting. I have a pic around somewhere of my first 'real' hens' egg in January of 1969. My first milk was a quart a day from a borrowed yearling goat, same year. You will never forget those farm firsts!

I'm so happy for you. It is an exciting adventure isn't it?
I still consider myself new to milking. I can tell you to stick with it. I always say a prayer as I walk out to milk - for her and for myself. I had to keep reminding myself to stay calm in the beginning. I've ended up on my butt more than once. Once we both got used to the whole idea of milking it went so much smoother and she gave much more milk. I do squat when I milk and don't use a stool. It's easier for me to move as she moves, which isn't much, thankfully. The first cow I milked was easier because I started milking once the calf was weaned. Tonight, I started milking a heifer that calved early this morning. She didn't fully let down for me, but we'll keep working on it.
Let us know how it goes. And please share any tips. I just might need them.

Coming from someone that couldn't do it without step by step instructions, stanchions aren't all that hard to make. (I'm not the least bit thrifty building things, though.)

Got about the same amount this morning... we had the calf separated from her mom, but we didnt do a good enough job and she jumped the the little railing around her and went right on out.
You can ask my hubby though, Im nothing if not stubborn headed ROFL... I will get more milk than this!
Im not a quitter
