SOOOO excited.. pictures coming soon

Dh is IN Niotaze picking up the cow and her baby right now!!! He should be home in an hour or so..

I am just too excited.

The water barrels are filled (55 gallon drum cut in half, both sides for water) and the hay trough is full of grassy alfalfa.. and there are loose minerals out

Im waiting as patiently as I can.. and I'll post pictures as soon as they are home and settled in

Anything I ought to know that would help them settle in faster? will they be more skittish than normal for a while? do cows adjust quickly?

Hi Jen,
When I got my Dexter cow last May she was terribly wild. I kept her in the barn for a few days with a gate where she could see my Saanen doe. I let her out after a few days and they became the best of friends right away. It didn't take too long to tame her with lots of attention, treats etc. I was able to pet and brush her after only a couple of weeks. Try not to worry, I think you'll all do just fine :-)

She's doing great! and Autumn too

Here are a couple of pictures.. She's eating treats from my hand and I got to pet the baby and rub down her side and scratch her neck real good. She loved it.

Awwwwwww. Thanks for sharing!

The best thing I can recommend is "be consistent" with all that you do so the cows learn the routine and learn to trust you.

Looking good! So, what size of halter did you end up putting on the calf? Oh, I should also add I'm as excited to see the green grass on your place as I am the Dexters

The calf had a halter on her already, but the yearling calf halter we bought was definitely too small. Im on my way to the CO-OP now to return it for a different size if I can find one that fits.

In the morning light things are wonderful!!! they came running to the gate to be fed when they saw us Spring wouldnt touch the hay I put out, but I sprinkled some sweet feed on top of it and then she dug right in.

Autumn lets us scratch her forehead, jowls and ears and just eats it up! She followed us out to the back of the yard to check on fruit trees that were blooming.

Spring is a little more standoffish but still lets me pet her and doesnt run off from us... she just kinda teases us right now.. just a LITTLE pet, then back off lady!

Im wondering if I'll get to milk her at all right now. She doesnt seem to have much in her udder... and when I saw Autumn try to nurse, Spring kicked her in the head I wondered if she's trying to wean her already or if it was just because we were all there watching?

Im still going to give her a few days to settle in and learn to trust me before I try to milk her though.. and if I dont get anything, then we'll just breed her in June and wait for our spring calf next year

Congratulations! I'm so happy that you got yours, I can't wait to get ours! It will be at least a couple more months, though. So I'll just live vicariously through your posts until then! Don't leave out any details, I'll need all the help I can get!

My guess is it'll take a week or so for her to calm down.

So, is this going to a familyu milk cow?

yes, family milk cow for us and eventually the daughter too...when she's old enough to breed.

And Josey ... we gave $1300 for the pair... both registered.
