Cow hernia question

I believe my 8 yr old Dexter cow has a hernia. Probably caused by falling into a large (3' diameter hole) in the pasture. Previous owner filled a well and it must have settled and you can see where she had walked across it and the dirt on top caved in. Is this something that will go away on its own? Need surgery? It does not seem to bother her in any way at all and happened 1 and 1/2 days ago. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Wow, I'm not sure about that one. I'd call my vet and see what he thinks. Sometimes if it's a ruptured hernia, it can cause a problem with them carrying a calf. You want to make sure the intestine is not poking thorough the hole, because if it starts to heal, the intestine can be squeezed off, and you sure don't want that. I'd really check with a vet. P.J.

Thank you for your reply.
I have contacted a vet and
will be watching the situation carefully.
With any luck it can heal on its own.
