Need to get my heifer bred.

I have a Scottish Highlander Heifer about 2 that I need to get bred. I thought maybe she had been she was with a bull until she was 16 months old but still shows no sigh of pregnancy. She is wild as a coot and my only cow. I think that I can get her loaded and get her somewhere to be bred. She is not leadable or calm enough to handle. That was my first mistake if I cannot find a way to get her bred I will have to sell her and I really don't want to. I am in Northcentral Arkansas and would consider either a Jersey or Dexter or cross of any small cow. I would like eventually to milk her offspring. I should have bought a small baby or one that was already milking, I know but here I am and I guess I just need to make the best of it. By the way hello all, I am new on this board. I really feel like a new cow owner that needs a dummies book. thanks in advance.

With her being wild and no way to restrain her, I think AI would be out of the question.

We have a Jersey bull but I don't think he is quite old enough to do the deed. He is 9 months old. We are going for AI and use him as a clean-up.

That is my problem exactly. I need to find someone who is running a bull. I believe that I can get her in a trailer but that has yet to be proven. My girlfriend assures me she can get her in the trailer. I just don't have the necessary fencing and gates and chutes to handle her. I have calmed her down alot but she won't ever be a inside milking cow. I can pet her and someplaces even brush her. But between the horns and those hind legs she will I am afraid always be a field cow. Maybe in time I can change that but right now I need to get her bred. I am about 20 miles south of Thayer, so if you are anywhere in the vicinity I am not opposed to driving a bit. Please if it is possible let me know.

orphy,

Breeding her to a Dexter bull won't help her, but should get you a much nicer calf.

We had the exact same situation here. A friend's Highlander cow was mean as a snake. She used her horns freely on everything about her. We bred her to Brenn, a really gentle Dexter bull. The mama was sold to a man who said he could handle her and the baby was kept. It grew into a small cow with a very nice pettable personality.
