I had just stumbled upon their website by accident but thought that she'd love the pictures since she likes the reds so much

The lady she got alot of her foundation stock from is now selling 12 Red heifers. Her name is Sandi Thomas and is on the for Sale site. Her sires usually come from John Potter and I think he has only 1 left right now until he has some more calves, but his is on the for sale list too.

Sandi is in OR, John is in MI. Plus Barb (Legend Rock) has one or two for sale in TX as well.

Hope that helps!

You know Darby, it's really not nice to encourage a persons addictions!!! Hmmmmmmm, I'm in Kentucky........they're in Texas........if I tell him I'm going to my parents for a visit, how long can I be gone before he knows? And how long can I keep them hidden (if I get back before he knows)before he notices them? He can't tell the goats apart , never knows when I sell any or get any new ones, maybe he'll think they're big goats!!! What , those are the new goats!

Darby, my new bull just arrived yesterday (Thanks Dan!!). This is SGF LCIN Tighe, that was on the other Dexter thread. Here's a pic I took of him this morning. He's still a mess from a long trailer ride, but you can see how red he is!! (Just encouraging you, you know). I wanted him for his milking bloodlines and small size, he's about 36" at two years and a non-carrier for the dwarf gene. He is my first red Dexter and I think he's a nice shade of red.

lol... MisFitFarm,

When you get your Dexters you can always buy his semen..... I had Tighe collected so that I can use him on oversized Dexters to Hopefully bring the size down.

Chalk Creek... I just looked @ your website (being relatively close to the Rockies myself), mapped the town in which you live (to see how far potential dexters are) and had to laugh when I was met with a map showing Guffy Colorado! We got lost there once, on our way to Cripple Creek, going the 'back way' because heaven forbid we drive in traffic (my aunt rode along, instructed us to go this way, and then commented every 2 minutes about how lucky we were to be able to avoid the traffic had we gone I25...unfortunately, because she never drives, she didn't know how to get to Cripple Creek the back way!) At any rate, on this 'great' trip, we were in a van that would do, maximum, 5 miles per hour on the inclines. We had the air conditioner off, conserving every bit of energy we could to try and make it up the mountain. Here I am with two elderly women, one of which is on oxygen & can't ambulate well due to back & hip problems, and I was afraid I'd have to carry them both on my back the rest of the way to Cripple Creek. I was sooo mad when it was me who had to look like the DA who got lost and go into the store in Duffy Colorado and ask for directions!

Anyway, those reds are nice looking cows. I've never been too interested in Dexters but I've just started thinking recently, because I probably will never really milk my Jersey for more than a quart of milk or two, that it'd be really nice to go with a cow that could raise calves and not require milking that were a bit beefier than Jersey. Anyone do a dexter/Jersey cross? How'd that work? Enough milk to raise a second calf and still enough meat to feed the fam. That'd be a great thing!

Great story, Cat. I know the area well, not much traffic, but a twisty winding road. Gorgeous country though.

I have had and milked a few Jersey Dexter cross cows. Liked them very much. The last one I had, on her second lactation, raised her calf, a Holstein calf and gave us plenty of milk. The only reason I sold them is the cost of feed these days and I needed to focus my resources on my purebred herd.

Have you checked out the rest of the photos on Legend Rock Ranch's website? There's a couple shots that look like the red cows are absolutely GLOWING in the sun. The reds I have do sort of POP out at you compared to the rest.

I sold some bred cows to someone who may put a small Jersey bull across them next time.

My Jersey is bred to an Angus for a June calf, but I've heard people say that the meat was the best tasting and I've heard people say that you're not getting much of anything, not good meat or milk. I don't know, I guess time will tell!
