Calf Scours

Hello,
I have a 2-3wk old red and white holstein bull calf . He is weak, able to stand if coaxed, and drinks if bottle is before him. I just want to know is it ok to give him 1qt water with 1tsp baking soda, 1/4tsp. salt,2tsp.sugar as an electrolite for the scours. The reason I am asking because I can't afford the meds. and the store bought items. He does take his botlle of replacer fine. Any info will help

Here is what I use....Welcome to the forum, sure hope we can help. At three weeks old, just drop the MR for at least 4 feedings, and feed this scours recipe or at least a variation of it. Get the old boy hungry again and active again and gradually bring her back on the MR....Others will disagree, but it's what I would do especially at that age....

Scours recipe

1. One can beef consume or beef broth can or beef powder.
2. Once pack sure-gel, jelly gelatin
3. Three whipped eggs
4. Baking soda, one tablespoon
5. Eight crushed 500 mg vitamin C
6. One teaspoon salt
7. One anti-diarrhea capsule, one capsule pour in powder
8. One pro-biotic capsule, open capsule and pour in powder
9. Mix these ingredients in a mixing bowl and pour into a two quart calf feeding bottle. Top off bottle with warm drinkable water. Shake and serve.
10. Feed as often as possible for at least 72 hours, the calf can’t get sick from this solution. NO DAIRY PRODUCTS!!!!!!
Spend lots of time with the animal, give it company.
