Hi Debbie,
What a cutie!
What is the cow's name? Just curious.
Hopefully Tighe will love his new girlfriend....

Hey Dan. The cow is my Polgaron daughter, Little Farms Mayflower. She is a gem. 40" at the hip, 41" on the tailhead, her tailset looks high in the pic, it was not a good angle to shoot from. And the camera flashed in the barn, so there dust particles on the lens can be seen. Oh well...
I'm thinking she and Tighe will be a good cross.

Hey Debbie,
You are right, Her tailset isn't so high when looking at the online pedigree's pics. Looks like a nice Cow. My Hotty's mother is a daughter to Polgaron.

Hey Dan. Did you notice Mayflower's dam's breeding on the pedigree? All Talisman. Some of the best milkers I have seen are Talisman bred.

so how can you get talisman semen? :P We're really wanting to use our two girls to breed more dairy into the Dexter breed..
I read an article by Ed McCullom on the PBDCA website about offering Dexters up as dual purpose but then not really breeding for that, not giving near as much attention to the dairy side of it and much more to the meat side.
anyway, I'd love to breed my two girls to dairy lines more once they're here

You're right about the dual-purpose qualities not always being in balance. As few Dexter owner's actually milk, they don't breed for good udders. But, as more and more are milking, better cows are being bred.
Talisman was the herd that belonged to John Hays, he wrote the book "Dexter Cattle." I don't know if there are any Talisman bulls on AI or not, but will look into it.

Hi Jennifer,
At this time there is no Talisman bull on AI. Not even one with ALOT of Talisman influence. I think the closest one is Black Bullet.

Debbie,
There is no record of a Talisman bull ever being collected. The Talisman herd was built on cows from the Peerless line, and they used a number of different bulls in their breeding program.
There is only one bull ever collected that I've been able to identify that had two Peerless parents, ( the Peerless herd never collected any bulls) and I tracked the majority of that semen to a company whose tank went bad and all the semen was lost.
His earliest cows had Peerless lines that were only several generations from the Grinstead lines in England which were cattle with beautiful udders and earned awards for milking. I have wonderful photos of many of the Grinstead animals on my website. .. . JamsHundred.com
One of the bulls used by Mr. Hayes for breeding was collected, and he DOES have strong Peerless lines is Jamie O'Callen. His semen is available for sale.
The Peerless herd was a dairy herd so it is to be expected that animals directly from those lines would likely carry milking genetics.

On the straws of Jamie O'Callen, I will check with Patti, or you can check with Patti. I think she knows who has some.
Thanks
