Can we talk about feed again? and halters

The people who have Millie now are feeding her prairie hay, sweet feed and occasionally brome hay.

SO... what should I have on hand when she comes home.

Hay
sweet feed
feeding trough/tank/bin
water

what about those molasses tubs? mineral supplements? We're in Kansas... its still cool, and we have 1 1/3 acres of grass for her to graze..or will once it greens up.

Also, given that Millie has horns.. small, but there, are there special halters for Dexters? or will the kind we find at the farm store work for her too? she's never been halter trained at all, so its going to take a little work to get her nice and friendly before she calves.

Of course, its still an 'if' with them as we've not heard back... but then there is also the cow/calf pair out east of us that is a very real possibility too. One or the other before the end of the month Im thinking.

Hi Jennifer,

Yes, there are special Dexter Sized halters. Go to www.Dextercattle.org click on For Sale. Sandi Thomas' Halters should be near the top.

Also - Jennifer, the online pedigree appears to be working so now you can check them out.

Thanks
Dan

Jennifer, I really wouldn't buy one of those molasses tubs for just one heifer, or even 2 or 3. They wouldn't eat it for a long time!!!! I'd just go ahead and keep her on the sweet feed (it has molasses in it) and good hay. They are very hardy little animals, just keep her on what she's been eating, and then if you want to switch feeds, do it gradually, kinda mixing the new stuff in a little at a time. Any kind of good hay and all the fresh water she can drink will take care of her. I always keep a salt block out for mine, yellow for the summer, mineral for winter. Cattle need salt for sure. If you get her let me know if you need a good bull, I've got one dun calf going to be ready to go in another month or so.........
