Twins,,Gotta brag a little.

These bull twins were born last year in March. I sold them in January, weighing just over 700 pounds each. Their mother certainly earned her keep and helped out the bottom line . Just had to brag a little now that I'm starting calving all over again. No twins yet this year.

Should have added. The twins were from a Gelbveih bull and a Gelbveih-hereford cross cow.

The one on the right looked to be the better calf. Little more beef to him, stocky, etc..

cool deal.

Nice looking calves. And now you've forced me to ask questions.

What is the rate of twinnning? LIke 1 in a 100?

How much did they each weigh at birth? I assume each is lighter than a single would be.

Do twins cause more calving problems or less due to lower weights?

Is twinning something you'd want to select for? Only problem I imagine is whether a beef cow could provide enough groceries for two. Sounds like yours did. Perhaps depends on type of feed.

Twins probably only occur at a rate of around 2 or 3 per hundred (on my farm). I don't try to select for twins although I think a tendency to twin is genetic and can be selected for. These two calves are an exception in that both are good normal-size calves. (Normal in my herd is around 85 lbs. )Many times they tend to be smaller and don't do well unless you supplement them with a bottle. Sometimes the cow will have problems claiming both , and one will be abandoned. I have always said I would rather have one good calf than 2 substandard ones. However, This cow had no problems raising both, she never doubted they were both hers and gave a abundance of milk for both. One calf did always look just a little smaller, but not a significant difference.

Thanks for the info - interesting subject I haven't seen discussed.

By the way, I like the color of those two - kind of a creamy blonde. I wouldn't mind a herd of those just to look at. Plus lighter means more heat tolerance.
