What is the difference between horse and cattle hay?
A friend wants to give me some hay that she can't freed her mini-horse.

If I understand correctly "horse" hay is supposed to be bug free. (blister bugs will kill a horse) So, in my neck of the woods, if someone is talking about horse hay they are talking about something that costs more and has been sprayed more to prevent parasite habitation.

There can be several reasons why hay isn't suitable for horses, such as blister beetles, type of hay, etc. Most of these things are not a problem for cattle.

Horse hay is usually a better grade of hay and has no mold or mildew to it. The blister beetle is usually just found in Alfalfa hay, not a problem in grass hay. I keep my cow hay seperated from the horses, because moldy hay will sicken or even kill a horse, but a cow, with her dual stomach, can process it just fine. If it's decent hay, just not suitable for horses, I'd sure go for it. What with the price of hay, I'll take any I can get........
