Tricky Little Heifer
Had a first time heifer outsmart me for nearly two days. First, they are very difficult to predict, in this case, she wasn't showing any signs. I just put it of my mind, thinking she was just slow to stand for the bull for the first 3 or 4 heats. We have been having some preditor problems in the area, so when she didn't show up for dinner, I was worried. Checked the fence line, and all the usual hiding places, but couldn't find her. Then I got worried, because the fence lines checkk out, and even if she found a way through, she would be sitting in the middle of the neighbors herd, mooching free hay. Finally found her today, on the bluff's over our pond. Hillside so steep that you have to climb it on you hands and knees. She had found a little terrace up there, and popped out her first calf. Just goes to show you, sometimes they have it all figured out and really don't need, or want, our help.
