Jersey heifer value?

Not saying I would mind you, but I have been giving thought to selling our wee Jersey heifer Mary; now about 10 or 11 weeks old. Our 2nd calf heifer Tulip gives us more milk than we can drink, and if all goes well she ought to continue doing so for another decade; during which time she has an excellent chance of producing more replacement heifers.

What are such heifers bringing these days? Mary is a pure blood but not registered. Tulip is varies in weight from 8 to 9 CWT, depending on the seasons and such, so Mary ought not grow to be too large.

Mother's Day is but around the corner and I thought to get Herself something to wear about her lovely neck.

Middle River - If you get a milker, I'll buy milk from you!!! Ahem...for my animals, of course! I would never thinkof buying raw milk in WI for human consumption as that is illegal so clearly it would be for my animals...

mommahen2four - LOL !!! I've been trying to get a heifer or cow for milking and raising calves, and surely wouldn't need all that milk for just my animals as my goats give a lot too - i'll surely let you know when i have milk for your "critters" :+)

i'd like a small dairy girl for milking and raising calves, as well as a few other heifers/cows for breeding ( such as dual purpose breeds, or crosses, or beefers - i have breeds in mind i want, but will consider any as i just can't find any ) - i do plan to have a nice small herd within the next couple of years. I've been having a hard time finding any though. There is a friend of a friend down the road that has a small dairy - i'm working on getting him to agree to sell me a Jersey heifer calf, but he just won't let any go - yet :+)

In the past 6 months I've seen heifers less than 2 months go for $300-$600. (The $600 one was at auction when 2 farmers got caught in auction fever.)

I had 5 heifers lined up for $50-$150 each ( from 2-6wks old ) but alas, that deal fell through :+( Others i've seen for Jersey calves is $200-$450 ( 2wks-5mo. ) but they were either at the wrong time for me or too far at the time :+( I want myself a dairy girl plus 2 or so other ladies ( hopeing to find a heritage breed or nice beef breed or cross for my other girls ).

The only dairy that I know of around here that has jerseys sells bottle heifers, a few days old, for $400 and they aren't even full jersey. Most of his girls are three way cross: jersey, brown swiss, holstein.

Jerseys 300 to 400 lbs, which would be a bit bigger than Haggis' 3 mo old, are going from $900 to $1150 at the local dairy sale this week.

Rachel,

I think you are correct. Even though I'm up by St. Louis there are NO JERSEY HEIFERS for sale in these parts, so I had to buy one from around Springfield, MO. and paid $750 for mine. She is registered mind you. (Looking at what's just around the corner, I hope we're producing our own milk on the farm soon)

We'll have two calves from out jersey/holstein cross heifers this December. We didn't have time or facilities to AI so we let the registered highland do the job. We were thinking about putting them in the freezer but I understand that highland milk is as rich as jersey and the 1/4 holstien might make them produce more. Do you think we should sell the girls (1/4 jersey, 1/4 holstien, 1/2 highland) for a family cow or put them in the freezer?

A real nice jersey just off her first calf went for $700 at auction here the other day. Nicest cow at that particular auction too.

I think you could probably find a buyer for a heifer in somebody that wanted a family cow that wouldn't overwhelm them with milk.

I've actually never seen a jersey heifer for sale, when I lived in California or here in Wyoming. However, recently I've seen a few cows for sale (in Utah), and the prices are usually around $800-1200. There was one for sale recently (may still be) for $400, but she's 12 years old, open, dry, not totally used to being handled, and as of her last lactation only had 3 working quarters. The one I am buying is 5 years old, milking, due to calve in about 5 months, in great shape, and very gentle/easy to handle, she was priced at $900.

Jersey bottle heifers, yearlings and family milk cows are VERY hard to find in the MO/KS area. I'd say $700 and UP.
