furholler - Cattle with non-black colored hides will continue to graze on hot days after black hided cattle have quit for the day.
The Cattle market, however, will pay you more to produce black cattle.
That creates what you call a conundrum.............

In lush pasture, beef cattle can consume enough in 2 each 45 minute periods (early morning and late evening) to meet their grazing requirements. Since they have a lax time schedule I really do not care if my black animals are in the shade chewing their cud the balance of the daylight time frame. The angus promotors have done a terrific task of selling their product to the house wife haven't they. Now almost all breeds are available in black, including herefords. I just sell what works for me and what the customer thinks they want.

I think the point in the book is not to interrupt those morning and evening grazing periods with a milking or movement because they are eating when they can. They need the food to produce either meat or milk. If that gets interrupted that is less production. Let them make the most of their time, in other words.
