Wasn't expecting that...

One of the black angusxjerseys bred to jersey just calved in the night...the baby looks just like a red angus, down to the redish pink nose and eyelids...and curly haired head. Jerseys as a rule have black noses...as do the black angus...

whodda thought

genetics are interesting, wonder if it will have horns?

that makes our total this season 3 girls 2 boys( had a bull calf the night before looks like a pinto horse, and he's jersey) other bull calf with 1/8 holstien looks like a pure jersey...he is tiny, the spotted one out of the smallest mamma we have is huge....

2 more to go, should be warmer by then...

I agree. Genetics are funny. I've got a neighbor who has the finest herd of black angus cows in the county. (all two hundred of them) He uses a handpicked, registered angus bulls which he rotates in and out of cows every year. He's about sixty and has been raising black cows since he was eighteen and his dad got out of the dairy business. All of his cows originate from dairy decent forty years ago. This past year, by some fluke of nature, he got about five calves that look as holstein as a holstein can get. Kind of funny cuz the nearest holstein bull is over twenty miles away. They even have bone and muscle structure like holsteins. He's wondering if these cropouts are from the original cows he started with over forty years ago.

Several famous, purebred, reg. Angus bulls in the late 70's and early 80's were secretly sired by Holstein bulls to achieve for frame and sale. This was when the tallest animal always won the show.
