Question Dairy newbie 4-H general questions...

Hi there! I primarily raise goats, ducks, and sheep. I am a 4-Her, and I'm going to get a dairy heifer to show this year in the spring. Most likely a young Holstein.

I have some questions. I have never had any cattle before, but my mother does have a degree in dairy science and has spent alot of time around them. So we know about feeding and a little about handling, but if you'd like to tell me anything special by all means do!

How much indoor space do they need? And since I only want one, can she live with my 4-H lambs? I only have 2 4-H lambs per year, and they have a smallish indoor pen and large pasture to themselves. I thought that they might be able to share with a small heifer. It wouldnt be too difficult to separate the food or feed them separately, so feed is not a problem. Im just wondering if cattle and sheep get along together?

Also, does anyone know anything about youth showmanship? I will be getting together with the few other people in our county who show dairy (alot of beef but almost no dairy) and asking them, but do any of you know anything on it? In general?

Thats all Im wondering about now, if I think of anything else I'll ask.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Abby-
My kids show dairy cattle our first cow we had in a 8 by 8 stall. With open to pasture all the time. The one mistake we made is not putting the heifer in her place right off. Take no bull- rap her on the nose if she misbehaves. I know others let their cows with their goats and sheep. Watch how they act.
Good luck and have fun- there is a great book showing 101-

Thanks very much!
This is probably a 10 by 15 pen, but he lambs spend most of the hot day inside of it and go out in the morning and night. Do cattle nap during the heat of the day too?
