Banding a four month old bull

Can a 4 month old bull be banded successfully. His boys are quite small still.

DH wants to know what breed he is?

Our holstien bulls we usually do at about 1 month or so...... But he said if you can get help & can get the bander over the testicles and then back off after the band is around them.... you should be ok.....

He is a Jersey. Quite friendly right now, lol. I'm sure that will change later today, LOL.

Hi Kath,

It may be fine, but my vet won't do it at that age. Mine recommends to cut them at that age. Our vet says that this is the best time of year (atleast in Iowa) to have it done. It isn't so cold that it harms anything, and it is cool enough that they stop bleeding fast and that no bugs.

Hope that helps!
Dan

I've banded my calves up to 5 months old. I do use two bands though and check them a week later to make sure everything is alright.

The deed is done!! It was a breeze. I have seen cat testicals bigger than his, wow!! Very tiny boy. Could this be because he was a twin to a heifer(freemartin)? My son and I did it with no problems. Rope around the neck, down to the front legs like a rodeo calf, down on his side, tied the back legs, made sure I had hold of two, and released the band. He didn't even flinch!

Good job Kathy! Sorry I didn't get back to ya! With the birth of a new calf on the farm, I've been a little busier than expected! I'm glad you were able to get the deed done!

You are indeed a go-getter. There are many things that I have tried in my thrity odd years on the farm; but that is one thing I have never had nerve enough to try. Way to go!!!
