Out of some bad, there is some good news

Today the classifier came through. I had two cows raised in score, one from 80 to 81, and the other that I think will go excellent some day went from 86 to 87, mammary is at 88. She went from 85 to 86 in September. I almost didn't put her in front of the classifier, but I decided to, glad I did. He said with more maturity she will go up much higher. But as with any cow, I like to see them mature slowly, not at a young age, then fail.

The fresh cow (Indus) was simply tooo fresh. But he indicated she will go up in score. I will score her in April when I do a non-area classification. Will be scoring possibly 6 then.

I'm sorry Jeff, but what is a classifier? Why are they scored, what is the top score and how low does the scoring go?

It depends breed to breed. Jerseys scoring is different, as far as ranges go. However with holsteins (more familiar with this). You have a score ranging from 60 up to 97. Poor is 60-70, fair is 70-75, 75-80 is good, Good plus is 80-84, very good is 85-89 and excellent is 90+. A cow can score on her majors up to 100, but you generally see them max at 97, and those are rare.

Scoring basically is a way to evaluate the cows to help give a bull a proof, and scoring also gives you the added benefit of increasing value of your animal, etc. This is how they get a Feed and Legs composite score, based on how the daughters scored. Same with the udder scores, etc etc.
