We wean our calves at 6 months of age, and keep them apart for 8 weeks. That is longer than most will answer, but we have yet to have one go back to nursing.
Since the cow will be feeding the new calf, I would suggest you keep them apart as long as possible.
When I put my back together, Cow is dry, and if/when a calf tries to nurse again a few well placed kicked from Cow will end that. I am not sure if Cow will push the heifer off if she is nursing a new one.
