Thinking about buying a winter steer
This will be my first time. I have some problems to work around. The large pasture I want him in has our septic and drain field. I understand that if the animal can make an indent with their hoof, it is too wet to have them on there. We are in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, and I understand that this means we shouldn't have him on there until May.
OK, so I have a smaller pasture I can put him in until then. It isn't even an acre in size. It is also uphill from and about 150 ft from our well. I am wanting him to be hay/grass fed only, because I believe that this diet produces healthier meat (if less of it.)
I have a steer in mind, and he is a great animal, great size, great price from someone I trust. That is why I am considering it. But I am wondering if I'd be better off letting this deal go and instead buying a steer in May to be slaughtered in late autumn.
What are your thoughts?
