Something new I wanna share with ya'll
Got me a blog started on planning for a future cattle operation. It's more or less an online journal or scrapbook, and a a bit of a basis to share with other newbies too.
So check it out at The Future Cow-calf Producer and I'd like to hear your comments, opinions...
Thanks

.
Most people with large herds who keep bulls use 1 bull for every 25 - 30 head of cows for best performance.
Can be a costly venture for a time before you have live calves that sell.
Most of what you learn that helps is not in a book, but found out to experience.

Looks good Karin. I will have to keep up with it since I'm doing somewhat of the same sort of blog also over at my blog, The Beginning Farmer. It will be interesting to read of your research and you progress.

No, not really. The format was already there, and I just spiffed it up a bit. I really don't know how to design my own, I'd like to know how.

ebook: I already have your blog in my favorites It's an interesting read in itself, and I'm doing my best to keep up with it as well.
bumpus: I thought it was something like that, but I seen in a book that it was a bit more than that. Thanks for the correction.

Your bullpower ratio depends very much on terrain and pasture size. Karin, if you were to check into bull requirements down in around Jenner/Buffalo and even around Stettler, you would find that they need more bulls because pastures can sections instead of acres and that's why you see a larger number. It's based on averages and it's those areas that skew the averages.

A young bull is only good for serviceing around 7-9 cows before he starts a weak sperm count.

It could be...but I've heard around here that a yearling bull can take on 10 - 15. A 2 year old: 15-20, and a mature bull of up to around 30.
Then like you say wr it could be due to location...and I think it could also be due to the breed....

Looks good. There'll be some interesting reading there. You can visit mine as well, just click below. By the way, have you read anything by Jim Gerrish, Greg Judy or Alan Nation?

Thanks. I like your blog too.
I've read a little by Alan Nation, but not Jim Gerrish or Greg Judy.

Karin L Would you mind if I posted a link to your blog on my blog? Keep mine in mind as I will be sharing some info in the near future that I think you'll love to read. I have to digest it myself first.
