Jerseys produce longer than any other breed? Thats far from the truth. Jerseys typically have deeper udders than most other breeds, they also are prone to things such as milk feever and they do not have the fight like many other breeds. I wonder who put that out, sounds like USJersey BS to me. If you want a LONG last cow, you buy a swiss. It isn't uncommon to see swiss at 15 still milking, and still have an udder up and away from the ground.

Jerseys eat 20% less, unless they are heavy eaters or heavy producers. We have a Jersey that eats AS much as a holstein, and swiss, while she produces 20% or in some cases 50% less.

Jerseys produce 32% less manure. That is another line of bull. The Jersey we have produces as much manure as any of the holsteins we have. Actually while in the barn, she is usually the dirtiest animal, as she manures more. A good appetite goes hand in hand with a lot of manure. Manure quantity is not breed specific.

As far as protein, yes that is a true statement. However recently at a swiss sale I saw some records that showed some swiss at 3.7-3.8 protein. Was at a Jersey sale in Sept, and many were 3.3-3.5, a few were higher. Swiss seem to be a higher protein breed. As far as Butterfat, different story. I have a few holsteins that have higher BF than the Jerseys we have, and in some cases a couple are right with the Jerseys for protein.

I only picked this stuff out, because I can't stand it when there is false advertising. Those figures are Jersey Association marketing crap. They want more and more Jerseys out there, so they tout them as being the answer to everything. I dont see other breeds doing this, mainly because they know that false advertising doesn't look good.

Jerseys have a few pluses, and its the reason for buying them. One is stature, they aren't big. Another would be calving ease. Everything else depends on breeding, and personal prefrence. But Jerseys lasting 20% Longer than any other beed? That is Bull#&*@.

Jeff you sure know a lot about the dairy breeds from all your response I've read over the years. Do me a favor and take a look at the calf ID thread I started about one week ago. Tell me what dairy breeds do you see in those two heifers. I know I've put you on the spot, but give it your best shot. I will re-post more photos when they reach two months of age....Just trying to learn.......Thanks TJ
