Calf Breed ID (photos)

Finally got to the sale barn and picked up these two heifers. Little black one with white belly is my daughters and is clearly a Holstein. How about a little help on IDing the little red one. I saw the little heifers dam is she was also 100% red, strong well attached udder, gourgous animal standing as tall and weighing as much as a Holstein. She fetched a good strong price too. Enough said, after doing some research I think she is 75% milking short horn soild red, 25% Jersey. Keep in mind I have never seen a live short horn nor doI have a good eye for dairy cattle. So what do you think?????

Thanks again Highland...TJ

Looks like a Red Angus/Jersey cross to me. It could be Shorthorn like you say, though. Could tell more if we had a picture of the dam.

I'd say JerseyXLimo but there are a lot of possibilities. Also that's not a straight Holstein, I'd say HolsteinXJersey but there are a lot of possibilities too. A true Holstein always has white touching all 4 hooves and always has at least some white marking on it's head.

Judging by those ears and her color my guess would be Jersey X Brown Swiss

I have no clue, But John they all look pretty good! I have never seen a collar on a calf! I guess working on a working dairy farm you don't see that kind of thing! Both really pretty! But the black one looks to have the runs How did you get them to your place? Red trailer?? Or wooden one??

Hazy, back of my wife's van. You have a good memory. The collars allow me to clip one into the wall of the barn while I bottle feed the other one....In these photos they had been at my home for 12 hours....Hazy rest assured they are much cleaner now....Lastly the collars are stylish and can be used on the goats once the calves begin to grow....As you know they will become 1000-1200 pounds unlikely the collar will adjust that large....TJ

TJ,

So you gave me a challenge. It is a tough call, I doubt it has any angus in its blood, not many beef qualities to it, if any. Shorthorns do have some white on them, however this calf also has Jersey features. Switch is dark, nose is dark, feet are dark (shorthorns have that as well). There isn't any white on the animal I can see.

Id have to agree with your original post, it seems to have shorthorn blood in her. She just seems too fine boned to have beef blood in her (legs aren't big beef legs).

Jeff

Jeff thanks for your time. Like I mentioned in my original post, I was fortunate enough to see the dam, big cow, good udder, dairy traits, and pure red just like her offspring. There is no doubt in my mind she's 50% Jersey...Thanks Jeff and everyone else...Just thought I'd run her by ya....TJ

the black one looks like a 3/4 jersey 1/4 angus ( just had one born myself)

now the red one will give a better idea in a few months if she gets the lighter ring arround her mouth and eyes. thats a big help in determining jersey
