update on cow murder

Since you are all so kind I thought I would give you a bit of a update. The reward fund is up to over $3,000 in 3 days. Our comunity is outraged over this crime- We have a investigating team and they have been out many times. The public will not let them off the hook. We have received letters and phone calls from many wonderful people. I believe we have a few leads. Hopefully someone will talk-

Good to see that you have some leads. I hope they do catch them as well, it makes the initial shock of what happened go away, puts you at ease. I would still invest in some security cameras, because locking doors can be dangerous especially if there was a fire, and you couldn't get things unlocked in time. Thats the only problem with locking up a barn.

Good news Liz. Did you find a replacement? I seen you were selling your herd of dairy goats to get a new cow... I wish we lived closer, my uncle has a barn full of cows he needs to sell before spring. (Others claving.)

I have not found a replacement cow yet- I am driving 5 hours this weekend to a brown swiss sale and not sure I can afford anything. Local no-one wants to sell.
I would never lock my barn either- I have been locking the milk house-
I also decided for me carring a gun is not the answer- I have shot many animal preditors- and am a good shot.
I do have goats for sale but breing my human children are so emtional they can not seem to agree to part with more then a couple.
Thanks for all your kind words- when we catch the creep I will be sure to let you all know.

I, in my sadistic mind had a thought. After a few days you should have had the health comishiner of the county come out and say they ran a test on the dead cow and it had some horrible contagious desiese and any one who came in contact with it is going to die if they don't seek imediate medical attention. Wait and see who shows up at the hospital! Just a thought!

Liz,
That is positive news. It's great to hear that the community is supporting you and the attempt to catch the perp.

Who ever did this needs to be dealt with severely.

Continued good luck......

Somebody has to know something. I'm counting on the lure of the reward to bring some info. Great to know the community is behind you. People just can't stand animal abuse. Keep us posted. You're in for quite a drive to Cobleskill. Hope it pays off.

Yes, about 5 hours to Cobleskill but it is just me and hubby-- and I need to get away. We went last year for a 4-H calf and paid $1500. for a calf. Heard prices are higher this year. So we will see..

Thanks for the support- Liz

Cow Murder?

Liz:
This is a crime, but not a rarity. What happened is that someone butchered your cow for a hindquarter. A thief, a common, miserable, despicable thief and probably not all that hungry either. Certainly stupid or he (women rarely do this) would have cut out the backstrap and taken those too.

About 5 years ago a young man near here surprised two others in the act of killing and butchering one of his calves. They shot him, but were caught. The killer was sentenced to death but escaped on appeal and is serving life.

More recently one of my friends lost a registered cow; the thieves killed her in the pasture and took the hindquarters. He and the cattlemnen's association put out flyers and a reward; within a couple of weeks the thief got into a fight with his girlfriend and she turned him in. He's in prison.

Don't fret this; it is not likely to happen twice. The furore over your loss has alerted people and caused a stink in the community. The thieves are probably going to be afraid to try it again. This will be especially so when the killer is apprehended.

When I was growing up we would occasionally lose a cow to some idiot shooting it from the highway. Never saw one stop to butcher it though. Probably because from where our house sat on the hill, my father (a Korean war vet) had a great field of return fire.
