Suffering from barn envy!

Wow! What a great looking building. Can't wait to see the finished product. I am jealous! I would settle for a Morton building...half that size!

Great looking new barn, pasture and cows. One comment though you did the hardest work during the hottest weather. Cooler weather is now upon us, don't work to hard....By the way I'm going to the sale barn on the 16th, maybe I'll see you there. I'll be easy the spot, I'll be the fellow who looks like he's from Tennessee. Honestly though I'd like to meet you there if your going....TJ

Uhhh, that looks like a swiss to me, big ears, light color, the head and the legs, udder as well.

If that is a Jersey, it has to be in disguise.

What you all are looking at; the barn is going to be a "special needs" unit, for cows who need a little extra attention or that I just want to baby a little more. And also i needed more baled hay storage.
The cow is a Brown Swiss. Her name is Molly-- very spoiled! I bought her in April at the Kentucky National show and sale. She had a sore foot when I bought her-- gave $900 for her and she had a heifer calf June 26th.
I am milking 30 cows right now.

Topside--- If you do go to Smiths Grove the 16th --let me know a day or 2 ahead and I will make it a point to be there!
I figured since there wasnt any hay to make I might as well get started on building a barn! Now if it would just rain so we all can get a late fall cutting............

Staying small can be more profitable as you do not need extra labor, extra machinery or extra land. Personally I am shooting for 18 cows, and concentrating on genetics. There is good money in selling quality heifers.

There is a farm that was featured in Holstein world (www.holsteinworld.com) and they have 12 cows. The farm's name is Gloryland Holsteins. The milk check doesn't pay the bills, their quality heifers do. They have an annual auction, and last year it averaged 19,000+ on 45 lots. What they did was invest in quality stock, flushed, and built a small barn that would house only 12 animals, along with a few box stalls. They do have some good people marketing for them. But for the most part, a small herd that is thriving. Funny said on the title "You hear about the 12,000 cow dairies, not the 12 cow dairies". Said also "Small but mighty". I'm glad to see small farms that are doing what I am after, and seeing how it is successfull.

Good luck!

Jeff

I love to hear success stories like these! I think quality is the way to bring back more small, family farms. Thanks for sharing!

Granville is to my north. This end of the county I like better, weather is better as well. They get more storms up there, snow when we get rain, funny how this county has a variety of weather. Up near Glens Falls, they get nasty storms, that we never get. Went through Granville on Tuesday, towards a Jersey auction in NH.
