How much beef from 1 yr old Jersey steer

I'm estimating he is around 4-500 lbs? Certainly a guess.
We are debating to send him with the highlanders on thursday or wait till next fall.
Any input appreciated.

A steer that small would only yield approx. 150-200 pounds. Jersey's are typically slaughtered @ 16 months and older and weight 700-900 pounds. Based on your approx. weight I'd keep feeding him for at least 6 more months. This extra time will improve the quality of the meat and will also put more in your freezer....

Agree with Topside.
Let the Steer enjoy a few more sunsets and smell the daisies. You would hardly recoup your investment at his present weght.

most time cattle will dress out about half their weight so a 500 pounder would dress 250 thats including all the bones.

Sycamore, js2743 is right, normally 50% of you once live animal is your hanging weight. Your dressed weight into your home freezer is usually 45% of live weight. So before you make any snap decisions do the math. Good luck.

My 1/2 Jerseyx3/8 Guernseyx1/8 Angus at 10.5 mo., nursed all those months, weighed 750#. [His year older brother, same parents, was only 600#. But he wasn't fed as well thru the winter.] Great tasting beef, really!
