Dexter "date night"

AI tech came tonight for Rosie's "date night". He AI'd her, then gave her one more shot of "sisterellen" to help drop the egg...he said that her cervix felt open which is a good thing, but I noticed no standing heat which isn't so great. He'll be back in 45 days to see if Rosie's settled. I am crossing my fingers. Dang I want one of those cutie patootey little Dexter calves running around!

well good luck Jcran, I tried several times to get mine AI'd before I gave up and bought the bull. My AI guy was a very seasoned Dairyman. I think part of my problem is she is an only house cow at the moment, so we really had a hard time timing her heat.

Hi Joan,

Well I tell you, once you have one Cutie Patooty, you will want a dozen...lol...

Dexters seem hard to AI, Some AI techs use the once they are in standing heat call me, I have found from talking to breeders who use AI alot, that as soon as they are in Noticable signs of heat, call the AI tech and they will settle better. Dexters tend to cyle faster as far as once you notice the heat, in 12 hours they can be out of heat. Just an observation.

I think that older heifers are harder to settle. It took us 4 tries to settle a 3 year old heifer. You'll have to be patient and keep trying.

It's worth it, believe me.

Red face

He gave her a shot of sisterellen (sp) which drops the egg; he said she "felt right" which sounds weird, but makes sense since that is his job. Said the cervix was open...I think I'm going to wait the 45 days, although you are probably right...too much going on today anyway. 90 bales of hay to put away, taking 30 5th graders camping for the next 3 days, etc. My plate is full; I'm just sending out good pregnancy vibes for ole Rosie. Calf kharma...
