Got My First Two Dexters

Hi, I just joined this group & wanted to introduce myself my name is Jessica & I live in Sullivan County NY. Last year I purchased a home with 8 acres so that I could get a few Dexters. My former place was almost all wooded & this new place is mostly pasture. I got my first two Dexter Heifer Calves, one I got the end of June & one I got 2 weeks ago. I am so excited about them!! I researched them for 2 years before finally finding some that were some what close by & still small enough to drive home in the back of my Suburban. I plan to breed them when they come of age so that I can have fresh milk & freezer beef. I decided on the Dexter because of their size & temperment since I am single & have no kids so I don't need tons of milk & beef. They are both registered with the ADCA. Roslyn was born May 1 & Mariah was born on June 1st.
Here are some pics of them:

Welcome aboard! I love to see pictures of Dexters as well! We love ours and the milk is awesome! My kids won't drink Jersey! We haven't had the beef yet but people say it's really good. I have a bull I'm thinking of using one last time, if you know what I mean. After that, I will be in the market for a young bull to take his place, preferably unregistered. Anyone got one for sale?

Hi Furholler,

All these are registered but there are bunches and bunches of them for sale on the www.DexterCattle4Sale.net website. You may be able to pick one up without papers even cheaper.

The Missouri Dexter Show and Sale is coming up Saturday too. There may be some there that go for not much too. It is in Lebanon MO.

I was thinking of going to that, but I think I'll be bow hunting. Thanks anyway.

Dan,

I have an interest in Dexter's or Highland cattle. Not sure which yet. I've looked at that website with Dexters for sale, but see no prices. How can I determine what I'd have to pay for decent working stock? I really didn't want to have to bother a bunch of folks on that list by emailing them when I'm not sure which direction I'm going yet.

Thanks!

Bill

Hi Bill,

Most people absolutely don't get bothered talking Dexters. Prices are not listed because it really depends on the area of the country you are in, the animal itself and the quality, color, horned/polled, show stock etc.

What are you wanting to do with Dexters or Highlands? That will make a difference in what you should spend.

I can't give you a industry standard or breed standard as there certainly is not one, but for us, we typically sell most heifers for $800. Most bred cows are $1100-1400, and Bull calves are typically $400 and up depending on quality. Those prices are pretty typical for black or dun. Red is much higher because it is still a very tiny minority in the breed. Dexters come in two types, Shortleg and Longleg. Alot of Short Leg Dexters (but not all) carry a gene. That gene is the dwarfism gene. You never want to breed a carrier of that gene to another carrier. When you breed carrier to carrier, statistically 25% of the calves can be aborted and end up having a bulldog calf aka dead deformed calf. Now with that in mind, you never have to worry about that gene as long as your bull does not carry the gene, it doesn't matter if the cow does carry it. Even with that gene, shortleg cows bring more (atleast in our area), Show stock no matter what color will be higher. Polled Dexters no matter what color will be higher. Trained milk cows will be higher, and some breeders make their living breeding quality stock and feel they are worth more. Which is some cases they are rightly so.

Occaisionally you can find some real bargains, sometimes you get what you pay for though. That being said, don't go out and buy the highest price one thinking you are getting the best one either.

What I would recommend is contacting the people that are close to you on the for sale list. www.DexterCattle4Sale.net

Find out what each one has for prices, then go to look at every single one that is in your price range, and pick which one you like, which one will work for what you want it for and etc. 99.9% of Dexter owners LOVE to talk Dexters and would be happy to show you around their place even if you don't buy from them. We probably have between 3 and 10 visitors per week from all over the country. We get alot of people who are traveling that come by, plus we get alot of locals just to find out what the heck those dinky cows are. We also get serious inquiries of people looking to start their herds. Sometimes we have what they are looking for, sometimes we don't. We can usually help people find whatever they are looking for though now with that list.

If you have any questions or anything feel free to private message me or email me at GrandmasDexters@aol.com I am happy to help answer any of your questions.

Thanks!
Dan

Welcome to the world of Dexters

If you find you will be needing a bull in the future, we'll have a couple for sale. Have had two Dexter bulls and a heiffer, plus two cross bulls born this year. Were located in Bath NY. Brian

Dodgewc, Thanks for the info, do you have a website with some pics of your Dexters?

Also thanks for all of the replies to my post.

I love my Dexters, they really are amazing. The one actually comes running to me when I call her name. The other one is still warming up to me, she wasn't a bottle baby but she has made tons of progress over the last couple of weeks.

Their horns are starting to come in (I am keeping their horns on them). At what age can I expect their horns to be full grown?

Also do you guys trim their hooves? Do I need to have someone come in & do anykind of hoof trimming? or is that something that I would need to do myself?

Thanks again,
Jessica

Trimming depends much on the type of ground they have to walk on, some rockiness might help keep them trimmed. Makes sense to me that only soft grasses to walk on would cause need of trimming.

Someone else probably knows better than me.
