update
So the AI tech came out tonight and palpated Rosie; he said her ovaries aren't doing a whole lot, but he came prepared. He said that he was thinking we'd best be prepared since she hadn't been around other cows and had never been bred before. So tonight she got a progesterone implant (which looked like one of those winged nail things that fly open once they're through the drywall) and a shot of "sister-ellen" as my daughter called it. In a week, I remove the progesterone whirlybird and give her a shot of lutalyse. Luckily, he has 3 straws of Dexter semen and I was able to buy them from the folks who stored them with him. He'll be back on Monday the 17th for an early evening date with Miss Rosie. I am crossing my fingers! $90 for his fees, plus $35 a straw plus lutalyse and his next call out. I figure that even if things get up to $300, the cow was free so its an investment that can't be bad, even if Rosie ends up as burger.
