calf is has weezing breathing and .....

a little bit of green crusties on his eyes, i may have heard him cough once as well. His attidue is normal, and he is alert and perky, still eating good etc. What is a normal temp for these guys ? I just noticed this yesterday, and have a call into the vet, however i'm not sure when i'll hear back from him, if not by the time i leave work and head out of town, i'm planning on picking up some penn. from the feed store ( only thing they carry ) - will that work ? What is the doesage ? The calf ( Sir Loin ) is a 3 month old Aryshire - i have no idea what he weighs either - is there a way to figure that out with out a scale ? no symptoms from our other calf, should i treat him too, or just keep an eye on him ? Should i blanket Sir Loin ? These are my first calves ( well, since i was a kid ) so any suggestions/ideas would be fantastic ! Thanks !

Do not wait on the vet. Go to the nearest farm store and get a bottle of LA 200

Click the above to read about the product.

I can not get LA 200 - i will be ordering some for my medicine chest, but that will take a few days - none of our feed stores have anything but penicillin - so unless i can get a hold of my vet ( i have put in two calls already today for him ), penicillin is the only thing i can get today. Thanks !

It won't do me any good to go to my vet unless i get ahold of him so i can pick some up - if he is out on calls going to the clinic won't do any good as there won't be anybody there. I've left two messages for him and will call again before i leave work, but he is the only large animal vet in the area, i'm pretty sure our small animal vet won't have it either ( but will call them just to be sure ), as they didn't even have vit. B when i needed it. Thanks !

Are you sure there will be no one at the office?? When any of our large or small animal vets are out on calls, there is still always someone at the office to sell supplies. And no, they don't answer the phones much of the time, but they are there if I need supplies.

there is only somebody there part time, but i did call the vet again, and finally got ahold of the ditzy girl that answers the phone sometimes, i asked if i could just stop by and pick something up, but it was like talking to a wall - she knew nothing, and the vet wasn't there, but i told her to make sure he calls me by 4 - so hopefully i can get what i need. I'll be stopping there anyways after work and see if somebody answers the door more then the phone :+) Thanks !!!

At least you got ahold of someone! I guess we are blessed with very decent vet and vet clinics in this part of the country.

I'm glad i finally got a hold of somebody too - although, due to past experiances talking on the machine and talking to 2 of the 3 assistants is the same :+( But the vet himself is wonderful, i wish i had a direct line to him, then i'd be set - i'm going to have to see if i can't work on that. I had two wonderfull vets ( and there techs were great too ) before i moved, boy i miss them.

ok, so i talked to my vet - he said that he rather try pen. first because he is so young ( 3mo. ) and if i don't see improvement in 3-4 days we will try LA 200. So i guess i'll be doing that - i'm just worried about him not getting better on it and going down hill or something. Oh, he said to dose him with 15cc for 7-10 days - thats with my guess that he is 200lbs - is there a way to figure out what they weigh w/o a scale ?

Here is a chart for you to use. It should be fairly close to accurate for your calf, even though he is not a heifer. Just scroll down to the "dairy heifer" section.

Trying to figuare out weight without a scale.... Our feed store sells "measuring tapes" for cattle.... I have 2.... One for dairy heifers & cows... and one for beef heifers & steer..... It gives a good estimate.....

As far as antibiotic goes.... we use Spectam.... the bottle says it's for poultry, but works great for cattle and goats.... When any of our calves are sick (not eatting, or just droopy, we give them 6 c.c. twice a day for 3 days.... it works great....
