Anybody AI?

We have a few cows and have borrowed the neighbors bull for the last few years but are considering AI. Anybody prefer it over messing with the bulls?

We are very disappointed with AI. Not one heifer has taken yet after going through 7 straws so far. I'm going to use up the remaining straws and then get a bull. Too frustrating to spend the money for semen and then an AI tech. I never wanted to get a bull but will have to give it a try if I ever want calves.

On the dairy farm we relied exclusively on AI for our milking herd. Can't beat it IMO. With proper heat detection and a competent AI tech it works quite well.
We did occasionaly run a jumper bull with the heifers when workloads kept us from keeping an eye out for heats. But he disappeared as soon as possible.
Being stuck with a bull makes no sense when compared to AI. You don't have to feed an extra animal, you can pick sires that fit your animals....calving ease, better feet, legs, udders etc., you can easily try crossing to a different breed.
AI techs never break down gates and pin you against walls (at least ours never did). an AI tech won't gore you.

It may be difficult to find a breeder that will mess with smaller clients but with a little persistance you can usually get them out.

We AI 100%.

Call Genex and the other services. They will have the local AI tech call you and explain the different options you can use.

Most will service the small operation. Make sure that you have the proper set up for the tech to do their work, headagate, chute, etc.

Or possibly a better understanding of cow cycles, heat detection, and AI timing. I think most techs are competent if called at the proper time. And, if they arrive when they should.

AI is the only way to go for me. Cow takes every time!!! She's noisey with her cycles, thank goodness. Only trouble is, she's given us four bulls! Sure do make for good eatin'.
