whats the window for a cow in heat? Since I only have the 1 Dexter, it's been kinda hard finding her in "standing heat" Right now, she is trying to mount the ram. I think there's a 36 hour window maybe????

It is 12 hours. If they are standing this morning you would want to breed them tonight.

whats the window for a cow in heat?...bulls usually prefer the window that is unlocked...if its the second floor, a very sturdy ladder will help.

All cows have a 21 day estrus cycle, what you have to watch for is when she is at her peak or in standing heat.

I have found a pretty good quality little Jersey bull I can buy for $450 then resale him after the deed is done....

The estrous cycle of a cow.............

she starts coming into heat; this cycle last about 6 hrs. she will be restless and often will mount other cows but will not stand still to be mounted.

she now moves into standing heat where she will stand still when mounted. this cycle last about 18 hrs and a cow should be breed between hour 7 and 18.

she starts going out of heat and this cycle last 10 to 12 hrs. She again will mount other cows and be restless but will not stand still when mounted. You have to be careful not to confuse this stage with stage 1.

the next stage is when she releases the hormones to support pregnancy. it last 2 to 3 days. if she is breed these hormones will start and control the pregnancy.

if she is not breed she will go to the next stage where the liner of the uterus is expelled. if a blood smear is noticed on the tail you can note this and assume she was in standing heat 3 to 4 days ago.

the next stage is when the egg and reproductive tract is prepared for a new cycle and is the longest stage.

she will now start the process all over and it has been 18 to 24 days.

Since you only have 1 cow and can not see standing heat you may consider heat synchronization drugs. You give them 2 shots so many days apart and then breed on a set date at a set time. works 80+% of the time.

John, thanks to your detailed info. I just found out that she was indeed going out! I will adjust my calendar and see if I can pick up that bull for the next time.

be careful with that bull, but im sure you already know that...

they can turn on you just like that....

18 months is usually the limit for good behavior, tho it varies.

Bleeding off does not neccesarily mean the cow did not settle if she was exposed (AIed or run with a bull). It does mean she is too late to breed this cycle, however.
If you saw blood count back 2 to 3 days and then forward 18-21 days. Look for her next heat around that time.
