I have used the standard tanks before with no problems on adult dexters ( long and short legged ).

The calves will need a shorter waterer....I used one of the half height rubbermaid tanks before I put in the Breyer waterer which is short enough for Dexter calves to drink from.

I used a standard Rubbermaid 100 gallon tank, but buried it mostly in the dirt. I fed it water from a bottom feed. It seldom freezes over here in Virginia, and when it does, it thaws with the first rays of sun. I also have a frost-free Freedom Fountain, regular height. The calves have no problem drinking from it.

still not drinking

I went and bought a "short" rubbermaid tub, still no luck. If I fill a 5 gallon bucket up and set it down ten feet from the tank they will drink from it. They will walk up to the tank and sniff it but thats it.

They may not be used to drinking from tanks like yours. Maybe just keep moving the bucket closer to the tanks, they'll get used to it soon enough. I'm sure the water may smell differant than they are used to also.

Good luck with your animals,

Carol

We have the rubbermaid tanks, but recently purchased a big steel tank. They seem to be creatures of habit because they prefer the rubbermaid tanks. We placed the new tank in between the old black tanks and let the water get down a bit. Only then will they drink from the new shiny tank.

I finally saw them drinking today!!! I am so happy because I am off this week and was worried about them next week with no water. Stubborn little things.
