Spent grain from a brewery

A friend of mine can get spent grain from a brewery. Is this suitable for cattle?
Don't know for sure what the grain is, she thought it was wheat.

It's fine. It will be low energy (the carbs all go into the alcohol) but it will have good levels of protein.

Good cattle feed, as Tinknal says. Thats why so many ethanol plants are in close partnership with cattle feed lots.

It is an OK feed, brewers grin and distillers grain are two different things. YOu could have a feed mill run a nutrient profile on it and go from there. It will not always be consistant either.

Mix it with cottonseed hull and you get a pretty good feed. Especially if you get the brewer's grain at a good price!

Brewer's grain is part of our dairy ration mix.

Thanks for the info. This is going to come from a small local brewery and will be free for the hauling. My friend will be getting it for her horses but doesn't think that they can eat it as fast as the brewery produces it. My Highlands are strictly grass, but it looks like that may change.

If it's a small local brewery, I'd guess they don't have access to a drier to make dried brewers grains so it's probably coming wet, in which case, it's still good feed but goes moldy very, VERY fast (3-4 days in the summer heat)

A homesteader working in a city may want to check out the local micro-breweries. They may be paying to have their spent malt hauled away and would gladly give it away instead. From what I have read it is loved by pretty well everthing from chickens to large livestock.
