Our first case of bloat

We a calf bloat late Wednesday night. We've heard about it, but didn't know much to do for the calf. He was miserable and the left side was very large and tight.

I jumped on here and read all there was on the subject. Of course we were totally unprepared. How I wish I had read the thread by Up North (I think) that described bloat, causes, prevention, remedies. (It's very informative, especially for newer cow owners.)
We decided to give him some vegetable oil from a plastic water bottle. Then we tried to walk him for about 1/2 hour. By the next morning he was up and moving and his body was normal. I have him on probiotics and he's doing fine today. Maybe we licked it in time.

We very much appreciate all the knowledge shared here. You've all helped us so many times with our cows.

prairiegirl.......................who happily lives on this little farm with her husband and together we learn everything the hard way.

The oil helped break the surface tension of the gas bubbles. The walking was excellent. You saved it's life. Well done.
