I found my dream Jersey!

Yesterday, I went to see a small herd of jerseys. They are on an organic farm that operates as a CSA. I found the heifer I have only seen in my dreams there She is what I see as the "classic" jersey, reddish coat on her back and face. She has little horns. She's around 6 mos old now and ready to be weaned from her momma. The farmer who owns them milks the cows without feeding them anything to get them to stand...he doesn't even tie them up! The heifer looked at me like "well, there you are." She licked my hand when I went to pet her and let me bend down and put my face in hers. I am in love! I am thrilled because she is only about 60 miles from our farm. I'm going to pick her up next week!!!

I'm more into goats, but the thread title intrigued me.

Isn't it wonderful when "dreams" and "livestock" go together? And now...we must see pictures.

Ruth, I'll have pictures galore next week when I get her home. I think we're gonna be eating rice and beans for a few weeks, but I couldn't pass this one up!

Well, good for you! I've been there myself a time or two. You just know when it's right....kind of like when I met DH.

Yep. I'm so excited about her that my stomach has been full of butterflies for two days. I've searched auction after auction, for the last couple years, and talked to everyone who'd listen about the milk cow I wanted. I just can't believe this is finally coming together!!!

My dream Jersey is Karma. She was my first one. That story is very different from yours. I heard of the Jersey Directory on this board, called the closest dairy and was told they had a small, low-producing young cow (3 years old). When I saw her I fell in love Karma is also the redder color and she's registered. Has raised 6 calves for me and is worth her weight in gold. It is really a wonderful thing when it comes together like that. Good for you and that lucky baby

A thought:
I go to pick her up tomorrow-yeah! But when I get her home, where should I put her? Should I put her in a small pen by herself for a couple days and feed her hay, or should I just turn her out in the pasture with the sheep and llamas and other two heifers I have? The other heifers aren't nearly as tame as the jersey, and I don't want her to become unfriendly.

If you're making a family milk cow of her, then by all means keep her close to you for a while, and handle her a LOT. She needs to get to know YOU, your smell, the sound of your voice, how you look, in order to build trust in you. Teach her you're the alpha female around there.
