Looking for Guernsey Heifer Bottle Calf

My husband and I are looking for a Guernsey heifer bottle calf. We live in Southern Missouri and want to raise the baby for a milk cow. My husband used to milk his Dad's cows before we were married and we have raised many bottle calves since we have been married. We have checked with a couple dairies in the area but have not been successful so far. Thanks!

Kathie I don't mean to be a cloud on your parade but I wanted to let you know what I was told when I asked a similar question. It might be extremely difficult to find a Guernsey bottle heifer. There are fewer and fewer Guernseys. For a long time I waited on a Jersey bottle heifer form the dairy I purchased my first Jersey from. They kept putting me off and I know it is because the bottle heifers are a good source of income for them when they sell them later.

Tango, I have realized in the looking we have done so far that they are very scarce. We would rather have a Guernsey because they have such a sweet disposition and stand taller than the beautiful Jerseys. So you never did find your Guernsey?

Un North, that's what a local dairyman told us. He said if we find one, to let him know. Like you said, tho, if we don't ask around, we for sure will not find one. Thanks.

I can't even google up the Guernsey Cattle club! Looks to me like your best bet would be to get a Jersey and breed it AI to Guernsey.

Donna, thank you for the link. The closest to us is in Iowa. I will save that link and my husband can contact one of the breeders there.

I did find my Guernsey heifer calf one day after I had stopped looking. I just had her for sale earlier but decided she was more important to me than money (in my life money is more scarce than a Guernsey )

Tango, I am hoping to have the luck to find a Guernsey. My husband has found a dairy about 2 hours from us that has both Jerseys and Guernseys. We are going to contact him and see if he might have a Guernsey/Jersey and then AI her and hope she has a heifer. It's a challenge, to say the least, trying to find one for sale. Same here about the money being as scarce as the Guernsey heifer.

We got our family milk cow as a 3 day old bottle heifer. I used the Guernsey directory to locate a local dairy and pestered him till he sold me a Jersey/Guernsey cross heifer. She is a big cow and closer to a Guernsey than Jersey in size and color. I have taped her at 1150 lbs before she calved 2 weeks ago. She is giving us 4+ gals of milk a day while her calf is at her side. Lots of cream and great milk. Good luck and don't give up.

My Guernsey heifer was about 4 months old when I found her. She wasn't a bottle baby anymore but I put her on a bottle to get her used to me. Two hours is a great distance. I hope you are able to come home with a Guernsey baby soon

I was able to luck up on a 3/4 Guernsey X Red Angus for $500 when she was 10 mo. old, weight about 450. She was in the local weekly newpaper's classified ads. [Only a Brown Swiss has shown up since then.] That was in Nov. '01. When she got to her second heat and had something over 750# on her, she was AI'd with her first calf. She's given only bulls...drat...I'd like a smaller milker! She's only two working quarters, and at nine months into lactation this time, I'm getting two gallons p.d., which is plenty for our needs, and then some!

Good luck finding that wonderful Guernsey. They do have the best milk if you're concerned about your lipid intake...and great taste and cream.

Kathie,

Look up Chupps Farms in the phone directory for Inola, Oklahoma. The owner's name is Dale Chupps. He has some of the best Guernseys in the nation.
