want to know mini cattle breeders in S. FL

I love this forum. In the short time that I have joined, I've gotten a whole lot of useful information. The members are friendly and helpful and make me feel like a part of the community.

At this point of the game we are in the planning stages. How can one live without graph paper? House plans are already with the contractor, now we just need to figure where to put the gardens, orchard, chickens and cows. How can one live without graph paper?

Just so you know where we are: SW Florida, Punta Gorda, 20 miles from "civilization".

We will be in the market for a couple of cows in a few months. We want the cows to be dual purpose. There will be just the two of us and the cows will provide both meat and milk. Since we are at retirement age and DH is in a wheelchair, we figured a smaller animal would be more manageable. Also we don't have a lot of land, 7 total acres and that includes house and gardens.

We were looking at mini zebu, dexter, and jersey mostly for their smaller size.
We are not interested in becoming breeders, we want just enough to maintain a little herd and have fresh milk and meat in the freezer.

We also want to meet people who are knowledgeable about agriculture in our area. John and I are newbies at this and all our aquaintances are "city folk".

Anyone out there that can supply us with cows to meet our needs. They do not have to be purebred or registered, just healthy and manageable. We will be needing them after our house is built and we can move to the land. We figure anywhere from this coming winter to spring.

Any advice or guidance will be most appreciated.

Jo

Hi, and welcome to another Floridian. I have some cousins who grew up and lived in Arcadia for 20+ years. They've moved back here to the Panhandle now.

I don't personally have much experience with the mini cattle, so I can't really help there. You might check out the Florida Market Bulletin that comes out monthly. It's free to Florida residents. You can click on the link below to subscribe, and you can also view it online. There are usually some mini cattle for sale in there each month. Might give you folks to contact for info.
