Time Article on Raw Milk

Thought this was interesting to forward off. We get raw milk from a farm and I still cant believe how hard and rules we have to go through just to get it. I couldnt drink the regular milk and was about to get my own milking cow when I found our local producer.

Raw milk sales have been extensively discussed in other forums recently. Just do a search on raw milk.

Does this mean that all of us that have our names listed on the "where to find raw milk" website are likely to see a sting operation like the seige on the branch Davidians back in the 90s? lol.......... It's still legal to sale raw milk off the farm in Oklahoma (for now)

We had, until today, two families getting milk from us in exchange for dairy feed. I don't care for "milk customers" even if it is barter, but these are very nice people. Still, there are people who want or need to sell milk to make ends met, and there is a demand for the raw milk, too bad the dairy industry, via government agencies, is allowed to interfere with "free trade".

we've got raw milk

we can buy raw milk in the local stores here in Maine....but as I posted a couple weeks ago the raw milk we got was not the freshest I think, but I was glad to see it available. We sell eggs from our house now, but I don't know the exact laws for selling dairy stuff, as we don't have our first cow yet, still deciding which to get. But we already have people who buy our eggs saying they would love to buy the dairy.

Recently we were told to stop selling raw milk. Listeria was tested positive in the milk, and what makes their testing methods backwards is the fact its once per month, vs each week. So you could have some pathogen in the milk somewhere between that time. Another thing too, something could be in the milk that one time, perhaps a bit of dirt, anything. It is all it takes to ruin things.

So what I am doing is pulling the plug, no more raw milk, no more permit. I cant trust it, cant have the state in your back pocket seeing if your hiding soemthing. It might have made some money, but I think its time to drop it. Maybe in the future, resume it and do it quietly after things settle down, but for now, its just too ---- risky.

I will still say drinking raw milk is perfectly fine, I will continue to do so. But selling to the joe, you never know when he/she gets sue happy. Also what you have to do, when they find it, is release a "press release" to they papers, notifying people that the state found listeria. One thing I hope is people dont panic. Now out in the western part of the state, someone did have it, was a show place. Guy was not happy at all, instead of it ruining his reputation, it was positive. He ended up gaining more customers. Now to my knowledge listeria isn't as dangerous as perceived. It can kill, but it does have warning signs. It can be treated with antibiotics, and cured. It also does not effect everyone, the very young, and the old are the groups effected the most, along with those with weak immune systems. It does effect cattle, and can kill them. It is also called "Circling disease", and it does what it says, animals will walk in a circle. Thye level of listeria is what makes all the difference. A small amount wont effect anyone, a larger amount is what is dangerous. If it is found in the milk, quantity isn't what they care about, its the positive or negative.

It does suck, but all I am concerned about is reputation as a whole, which I doubt effects it (genetics wise), that would be effected by selling a crap animal, calling it different. Also selling bad feed, etc etc. Ah well, thats the government for you, worried about a disease that is nothing like the flu, which kills a good deal each year.

There are several different strains of listeria, only one of which(I think) is dangerous. We occasionally get a batch of cheese at work that comes up positive, throwing all the production schedules into a tailspin, then find out later it was a harmless type
